Discovering Your Ikigai: A Journey to Purpose and Passion

Brodrick Aberly | Seattle | Nov. 2022

Do you know your Ikigai?

If your answer is “no” or “what’s that?”, read this article and thank me later.

Ikigai, pronounced [ee-kee-guy], is a Japanese concept that basically translates to “a reason for being”.

It’s the sweet spot where your passion (stuff you like doing), your talent (stuff you’re naturally good at), what the world needs (problems you could help solve), and what you can be paid for (how you can make a living) all converge. When these four elements come together, it’s like hitting a life and career jackpot.

So, in essence, Ikigai is all about discovering your special place in the world by combining your passions and talents with the broader needs of the market and world at large.

About 7 years ago I embarked on a journey to live by my Ikigai, and the process has been a game changer. I discovered that my Ikigai revolves around empowering marginalized communities through media. The deep sense of satisfaction I feel for my work is something I wholeheartedly wish for you.

Curious on how to find your Ikigai? It’s easier than you might think.

Here are steps to get you started:

1. Reflect on your passions. What ignites you? What are some topics you can talk about endlessly or activities you can do without getting tired? By identifying the things that fill you with enthusiasm, you can gain an understanding of what your passions might be.

2. Recognize your strengths. What comes naturally to you? What do other people ask you for help with?

3. Consider what the world needs. What societal issues deeply concern you? What problems do you yearn to see resolved? If thinking about the woes of the entire world is too overwhelming, you can observe your local environment for issues that need to be addressed.

4. Think about how you can earn. Explore how you can use your skills, knowledge, and experiences to make a living while staying true to your values.

Your ikigai lies at the intersection of these four elements. It might take a little time or a lot of soul searching to unveil your path, so don’t be disheartened if you don’t figure it out right away. Keep exploring and experimenting! The goal is to lead a purposeful and passionate life.
